Dean’s Message

A very warm welcome to the School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The School of Physics was one of the three Schools that were set up when the University was established in the year 1969. The School has grown and evolved since its inception, and now emerge as one of the leading schools in USM, garnering an international consultation in Radiation Science and Applied Geophysics, and a national reputation in Energy, Environment, Nano-Optical research and X-ray Crystallography, whilst diversifying the thrust through the establishment of research groups, namely, Applied and Engineering Physics; Astronomy and Atmospheric Science; Condensed Matter Physics and X-ray Crystallography; Energy Studies; Geophysics; Medical Physics and Radiation Science ; and Theoretical and Computational Physics.

In transforming and accelerating educational excellence, the School offers an international dual degree program with OTH Regensburg, Germany which upon successful completion of the course, the candidate will obtain an MSc (Solid State Physics) from USM and MEng (Electrical and Microsystems Engineering) from OTH. Our offshore program in MSc (Radiation Science) with the Malaysian Nuclear Agency for the international and local candidates will further enhanced our position globally.

Presently, we continue to offer the 5 undergraduate academic programs (Pure Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Engineering Physics and Medical Physics), 2 MSc by coursework (Medical Physics and Solid State Physics), 2 MSc by mixed modes (Applied Geophysics and Radiation Science) as well as graduate research both at MSc and PhD levels.

We are focusing on our vision “Towards global excellence in transdisciplinary research and education in Physics” with the aim of enhancing the performances of the School, achieving and sustaining excellence, and contributing to the success of a prestigious research university; in line with the ‘Consolidate for the University’s Excellence (BUKU)-Manifest Achievements’.

Our mission is “To provide academic, research, and educational social programs for development of human capital, knowledge, and technology for a sustainable nation”.

We would like you to join us, to be part of this transformation.

    Acting Dean
